FAQs
Basic Questions

I am new to genealogy and would like to know where to get started in Laclede County?  Welcome to the fascinating world of genealogy! It's great that you're starting your research in Laclede County. Here are some steps and resources to help you begin your journey:

1. Begin with yourself and work backward. Talk to your living relatives—parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles—and ask them for names, dates, places, and stories.  Gather any documents you already have, such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, obituaries, and family photos. These are your most valuable primary sources.
2.  Check out the USGenWeb Archives, Missouri and other online websites like FamilySearch, Ancestry, and WikiTree
3. Contact the local Genealogical Societies, like Laclede Genealogical Society, local libraries online libraries like the National Archive in St. Louis, cemeteries and funeral homes.  FindAGrave many times has obits in the bio.

I don't see XXX church or cemetery on your list?

You don't see the cemetery on the list most likely because it hasn't been added yet. Cemetery and church lists are often compiled by volunteers, and it's easy for some to be missed, especially if they are small, historic, or no longer in use

The pictures are so tiny, I can't see them.

They are "thumbnail" pictures. Click on the picture for a larger view. I don't have a gallery up yet as I'm recreating all the pages but in the coming weeks I will be adding profiles of early settlers and hopefully photos.  Also, you might be able to zoom in on the picture using your web browser's built-in zoom function (often by holding down the Ctrl key and pressing the + key on your keyboard)

How do I submit information to you?

You can type the information in an email to me or attach a document (.doc, .txt) to the email.

Most genealogy websites, especially those run by volunteers (like Laclede County),include at a minimum, their contact info in the footer.  Please attach a document to your e-mail (e.g. .doc or .txt) to my e-mail or once a county coordinator adopts this county, to them.

Specific People:

I am looking for information about XXX.

Unfortunately, if you don't see it on the site then I don't currently have any information about it. I do not live in this county or the State of Missouri (however, I will be relocating back to St. Louis), so am unable to check other resources except online. You can also provide me with additional information in case I can try and research for you.

Can you send me a marriage license (or birth certificate, death certificate, court document) for my ancestor?

I'm sorry, but I cannot directly send you legal documents like a marriage license, birth certificate, or death certificate for your ancestor. These are confidential records, and access to them is restricted by law to protect privacy.  Please check Vital Records for ways to get those documents.

Can you look some information up for me?

I'm a resource for you but the only way that I can offer assistance is online, if you send me the pertinent info and the person you're looking for I will do my best to assist you.

We all appreciate your contribution!
